March News:
Smack's Bayou Marina Application Re-submitted
Many of our residents probably remember last summer's fight with the Eden Isles Apartments and their application to install a 50-slip marina in Smack's Bayou. The Development Review Commission voted that proposal down. (St. Pete Times Article link) The Shore Acres Civic Association was strongly opposed to this 50-slip marina.
The owner of the apartments, the Laramar Group of Illinois has submitted a new application to install a 44-slip marina. Click the image below for map of latest plan. The length of Dock "D" has been reduced in length and now the project must go before the DRC again. Links to the application documents are below.

Membership Drive 2010
Letter to all current and past members (click here)
All memberships expire Febuary 1, 2010. The SACA board of directors voted to reduce membership to only $10 annually for 2010. Although membership is voluntary, the Civic Association really needs your membership. Throughout the year many projects are planned to improve our neighborhood. The more members we have, the more projects we can accomplish. In the past two years, some of the projects we have accomplished have included; Bridge Cleanup Day, landscaping, new neighborhood signs, traffic safety projects, Crime Watch, and drainage project implementation. Along with these projects, the board persues several grants each year. This past year, we were successful on three grants totaling approximately $10,000. This grant money is usually matched by labor or cash. We have some very ambitious projects planned for 2010. Our board is completely volunteer and they work on these projects for the sole purpose of improving our neighborhood.

Neighborhood Crime Watch Program
The neighborhood Crime Watch Program got a kick-start at our November '09 meeting. Many thanks to Dr. Webb and Officer Lopez of the St. Pete Police Department for giving a very informative presentation about the SPPD’s crime reporting system on crimereports.com. Dr. Webb explained that the SPPD updates information sent to www. crimereports.com twice a day. This is a very simple graphical website which maps out all the crimes that the SPPD responds to within your search radius. You can even set it up so that you receive an e-mail whenever crime occurs within a search radius.
During the November Meeting, several folks volunteered to become block captains in the crime watch program. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Rod Moren via e-mail at rodmoren@msn.com. Shore Acres was approved for a grant for t-shirts and caps for crimewatch volunteers as well as several crimewatch signs for the neighborhood hot-spots.
